A Whale’s Tail

Illustrating something with lots of curves can be tricky. Recently I noticed the shorty awards logo and wondered how you illustrate something simple and sophisticated like that. Drawing something similar is easy but part of the effect comes from the symmetry. So we know when symmetry is involved we draw the part then repeat it to form the whole. That’s the method I chose for my whale’s tail. Follow the steps in the gallery and try it yourself. This method should be transferable to other illustrations which require symmetry but have complex curves.
